Has the post-holiday sugar monster taken over your home?? You may be thinking “What’s a sugar monster?” Well, let me tell you. The sugar monster is that evil little monster that enters my family during the holidays when treats and unhealthy food is all around us and we give in and eat it. It makes us cranky, tired, and sluggish. The sugar monster settles in and keep demanding sugar even after the holidays are over. So, can we get it out of our lives?
Here are FIVE WAYS TO TAME THE SUGAR MONSTER FOR YOUR KIDS (AND YOU TOO!)
+Get the holiday treats out of your house. Donate them to your local food shelter. It is easier to avoid sugar when it is less accessible, such as not in your pantry.
+Reach for fruit instead. Try to always have a bowl of fresh fruit out on your kitchen counter. We always have bananas, apples and oranges!
+Try the 80/20 rule instead of going cold turkey. Eat healthy and nourishing foods 80% of the time, with lots of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. And then you can enjoy some yummy treats throughout the week. When you are craving something sugary and sweet, first try to grab some fresh fruit! We also love medjool dates to cure our sweet tooth!
+Distract yourself from giving into those cravings. Drink a large glass of water or go for a brisk walk before you give in.
+Make sure you are eating enough protein and healthy fats in your diet. Protein and fat keep you feeling full and satiated. A morning KidzShake smoothie, with a spoonful of nut butter or ¼ of an avocado, is the perfect way to keep your sugar cravings at bay.
